Possible Causes
Worn or cracked plastic drain valve, Debris caught in drain valve seat, Drain valve left partially open after flushing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Hot water can cause burns. Allow the tank to cool or use caution when working near the drain.
- 1. Verify closure: Attach a garden hose and open the drain briefly to flush debris. Then close the valve firmly and check for leaks.
- 2. Cap the outlet: As a temporary measure, install a threaded hose cap on the drain outlet to stop minor seepage.
- 3. Replace drain valve: Turn off cold water supply and power/gas. Open a hot faucet and drain the tank below the level of the drain valve. Unscrew the old valve and install a new brass or OEM John Wood drain valve using thread sealant.
- 4. Refill and test: Close the drain, open cold supply, and purge air from hot faucets before restoring power or gas.
