Possible Causes
Excessive system pressure, Thermal expansion with no expansion tank, Faulty T&P relief valve, Overheating due to thermostat failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: The T&P valve is a critical safety device. Do not cap or plug it. Hot water discharge can cause burns.
- 1. Check water pressure: Use a pressure gauge on a nearby faucet. If static pressure exceeds 80 psi, install or service a pressure-reducing valve.
- 2. Thermal expansion: In closed systems, install or check the expansion tank. A failed expansion tank can cause frequent T&P discharge.
- 3. Test T&P valve: Lift the test lever briefly to flush debris, then release. If it continues to drip, replace the valve with a properly rated John Wood-compatible T&P valve.
- 4. Check thermostat: Ensure the heater is not overheating. If water is excessively hot, diagnose and repair the thermostat or gas control.
