Control display shows “Err 1” and valve will not start a regeneration cycle

Safety first: Disconnect power to the Autotrol softener before opening the control valve cover. Shut off water and relieve pressure using the bypass valve.

• Check for mechanical jam: Remove the control cover. Manually rotate the camshaft/rotor-disc with a screwdriver on the motor shaft (if accessible). If it is hard to turn or stuck, inspect for debris, broken gear teeth, or misaligned cam. Clear any foreign material and re-seat the cam.
• Inspect drive motor: Reconnect power briefly and command a manual regeneration. Watch the motor. If it hums but does not turn, or does not energize at all, test for 24 VAC (or rated voltage) at the motor terminals during a call for regeneration. Replace the Autotrol drive motor if voltage is present but the motor does not turn.
• Check motor coupling and gears: Verify the motor coupling is not cracked or slipping on the camshaft. Inspect the gear train for stripped or missing teeth. Replace damaged gears or the complete Autotrol cam/gear assembly.
• Verify cam position switch/encoder: On models with a micro-switch or optical encoder, ensure the wiring harness is firmly connected and the switch actuator rides correctly on the cam. Test continuity of the cam switch as the cam rotates. Replace the cam position switch/encoder if it does not change state.
• Reset and test: After repairs, reassemble the cover, restore water and power, and initiate a manual regeneration to confirm the error clears and the valve cycles through all positions.
