Possible Causes
Binding rotor-disc or seal pack, Worn or stripped cam gear, Weak drive motor, Faulty cam position switch feedback
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the softener and place the valve in bypass before disassembly.
- Inspect rotor-disc and seals: Remove the top cover and cam assembly as per Autotrol service manual. Check the rotor-disc and seal pack for scoring, swelling, or debris that could cause drag. Clean the valve body and replace the rotor-disc and seal kit if worn.
- Check cam gear train: Rotate the camshaft by hand. It should move smoothly through all positions. If you feel skipping or binding, inspect the cam gear and intermediate gears for wear or broken teeth. Replace the cam/gear kit if damaged.
- Test motor torque: With power restored and the valve out of bypass, start a manual regeneration and observe. If the motor stalls under load but runs freely when disconnected from the cam, replace the drive motor.
- Verify position feedback: Ensure the cam position switch or encoder is properly aligned and its wiring is intact. Test continuity or signal output as the cam rotates. Replace the cam position switch/encoder if it fails.
- Reassemble and test: Reinstall all components, restore water and power, and run a full regeneration to confirm the error does not reoccur.
