Possible Causes

Failed turbine flow sensor, Blocked turbine, Broken flow meter cable, Faulty flow input on control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Shut off water and relieve pressure before removing any plumbing connections.

  • Inspect turbine housing: Locate the Autotrol turbine flow meter (often in the outlet or bypass assembly). Remove it and check that the turbine spins freely. Clean out any debris or scale.
  • Check sensor and cable: Inspect the Hall-effect or reed sensor and its wiring harness for damage. Ensure the connector is firmly seated on the control board. Replace the turbine sensor and cable if damaged.
  • Test sensor output: With the sensor connected and the valve pressurized, slowly run water through the softener while monitoring the control display for flow indication. If no flow is registered and the turbine spins, the sensor or board is faulty.
  • Replace faulty component: Replace the turbine flow meter assembly if the turbine is seized or the sensor is defective. If a known-good sensor still does not register, replace the control board.
  • Reprogram and test: After replacement, confirm hardness and capacity settings, then run water and verify that flow and remaining capacity update correctly and the error clears.
