Possible Causes
Failed keypad membrane, Loose display board ribbon cable, Damaged user interface board, Moisture intrusion into control head
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the softener before opening the control housing.
- Inspect keypad and overlay: Check for cracks, water damage, or delamination of the keypad overlay. If buttons feel stuck or unresponsive, the membrane may be damaged.
- Check ribbon cable: Remove the front cover and verify the ribbon cable between the display/keypad board and the main control board is fully seated and not pinched or corroded. Reseat the connector.
- Dry moisture: If condensation or water is present inside the control, dry thoroughly and correct any leaks above the unit. Moisture can short keypad contacts.
- Test button response: With power restored, attempt to navigate the menu and start a manual regeneration. If some or all buttons remain unresponsive, replace the Autotrol keypad/display board or the complete control module, depending on model.
- Seal and protect: Ensure the control cover gasket is intact to prevent future moisture intrusion.
