Possible Causes

Closed or partially closed inlet bypass valve, Blocked inlet screen on control valve, Low or no household water pressure, Kinked or restricted inlet plumbing to softener head

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off electrical power to the softener and close the main water supply if you need to disconnect any plumbing. Depressurize the system by opening a nearby cold-water faucet.

  • Check bypass position: Verify the Clearwater bypass valve is in the SERVICE position, not BYPASS. Move the red/blue handles or rotary bypass knob fully to SERVICE.
  • Inspect inlet shutoff: Confirm the inlet shutoff valve feeding the Clearwater control valve is fully open.
  • Clean inlet screen: Shut off water and relieve pressure. Remove the inlet union at the Clearwater control head. Locate and gently remove the small inlet screen or filter basket. Rinse debris under running water and reinstall.
  • Check household pressure: Ensure well pump or municipal supply is on and pressure is at least 30 psi. If pressure is low, correct upstream issues first.
  • Reset the error: Restore power, then press and hold the Clearwater controller’s REGEN or RESET key for 5–10 seconds (per your model’s manual) to clear E01. Run a manual regeneration and confirm normal flow.

If E01 returns immediately, the internal flow sensor or control valve may be faulty and should be inspected by a technician.
