Controller display shows “Err 01” and softener will not initiate a regeneration cycle automatically.

Safety first: Shut off electrical power to the controller (unplug the power supply or turn off the circuit), and close the main water supply to the softener. Open a nearby cold faucet to relieve pressure.

Inspection and cleaning steps:

• Locate the turbine/flow sensor assembly on the Kinetico control valve (often in the outlet or meter module).
• Bypass the softener using the Kinetico bypass valve (turn to BYPASS position).
• Remove the turbine housing cover according to the service manual (usually held by screws or clips).
• Inspect the turbine wheel for debris, iron buildup, or scale. Clean gently with a soft brush and water; do not use harsh chemicals.
• Spin the turbine by hand; it should rotate freely with no binding. If it sticks or wobbles, the turbine assembly is likely bad.
• Check the magnet on the turbine (if visible). If cracked, missing, or loose, replace the turbine assembly.
• Inspect the sensor wiring harness from the turbine to the controller for damage, corrosion, or loose connectors. Reseat connectors firmly.

Reassembly and test:

• Reinstall the turbine housing and ensure all O-rings are seated and lubricated with silicone grease.
• Return the bypass valve to SERVICE slowly to avoid water hammer.
• Restore power to the controller and clear the error (power cycle or follow the controller reset procedure).
• Open a faucet and verify that the display shows flow or counts gallons. If Err 01 returns, the turbine/flow sensor assembly likely needs replacement.

When to call a technician: If you are not comfortable opening the valve body or if the turbine is integrated into a complex meter module, contact an authorized Kinetico technician to avoid leaks or valve damage.
