Display shows “Err 03” and the softener stops mid-regeneration or will not start a regeneration cycle.

Safety first: Disconnect power to the controller and place the system in BYPASS to prevent water flow during service.

Mechanical inspection:

• Remove the controller cover to access the valve drive motor and gear train.
• Check for obvious signs of damage: cracked gears, broken motor mount, or water intrusion.
• Attempt to manually advance the control disc/cam (if the model allows manual indexing) using the service knob. It should move smoothly with moderate resistance.
• If the disc is seized, there may be debris or resin beads in the valve. Do not force it; forcing can break internal parts.
• Inspect the motor wiring harness and connector for corrosion or loose pins. Reseat the connector.

Electrical checks:

• With power restored and extreme caution, listen for the motor attempting to run during a forced regeneration start.
• If the motor hums but does not turn, the motor or gear train is likely jammed or failed.
• If there is no sound and no movement, test the motor for continuity with a multimeter (power off). An open circuit indicates a bad motor.

Resolution: Replace the valve drive motor assembly or the entire control head if gears or the control disc are damaged. This is a precision assembly; if you are not experienced with Kinetico valves, have a certified technician perform the repair and re-index the valve correctly.
