Water Hammer / Rapid Valve Transition Noise
Water softener causes a loud banging or hammering noise in the pipes during regeneration.

Possible Causes
High water pressure, Loose plumbing supports, Rapid closing of internal valve ports, Undersized or long drain line
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: High pressure can damage plumbing; consider checking pressure before proceeding.
Check water pressure:
- Use a pressure gauge on a nearby faucet to measure static pressure. If above 80 psi, install or adjust a pressure reducing valve.
Plumbing support:
- Inspect pipes near the softener and secure any loose sections with proper clamps or hangers.
Drain line:
- Ensure the drain line is properly sized and not excessively long or elevated, which can cause surging.
Resolution: If noise persists, a water hammer arrestor may be installed on the supply line near the softener. Internal valve issues are less common but may require a technician to inspect the control head.
