Control valve will not start regeneration; display shows ERR 01 and unit remains in service position.

Safety first: Unplug the softener’s power supply and close the inlet water valve before opening the control head. Depressurize by running a nearby faucet until flow stops.

• Inspect for mechanical jam: Remove the control valve cover. Locate the drive motor and cam/gear assembly. Check for broken plastic pieces, salt debris, or foreign objects jamming the rotor disc or cam.
• Manually index the valve: Using a screwdriver on the manual advance slot (if provided on your Pentair valve model), gently rotate the cam to move the valve through positions. If it binds or will not move, the rotor disc or seals may be swollen or damaged.
• Check motor operation: Restore power briefly with the cover off (keep hands clear). Initiate a manual regeneration from the control panel. Observe if the motor attempts to turn. If the motor hums but does not rotate, or does nothing, it is likely failed.
• Inspect position switch: Many Pentair valves use a micro-switch or optical sensor to detect valve position. Ensure the switch actuator is properly aligned with the cam and that wiring is firmly connected.
• Corrective action: Remove any debris, re-seat the cam, and tighten loose screws. If the motor does not run or is very weak, replace the Pentair valve drive motor. If the rotor disc is scored or swollen, install a Pentair rotor & seal kit for your exact valve model.
• Test: Reassemble the cover, open the inlet valve slowly, plug the unit back in, and start a manual regeneration. Confirm the valve now steps through all cycles without error.
