Possible Causes

Failed Pentair temperature sensor, Sensor located near hot water source, Control board misreading sensor, Loose sensor connection

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect power before accessing internal sensors. Do not run hot water through a softener designed for cold water only.

  • Check plumbing: Verify the softener is installed on the cold water line only and that there is no cross-connection allowing hot water into the inlet.
  • Inspect sensor: Locate the temperature sensor on the valve or plumbing. Ensure it is firmly attached and not touching a hot surface (e.g., water heater flue).
  • Wiring check: Reseat the sensor connector on the control board. Look for damaged insulation or corrosion.
  • Sensor test: Measure sensor resistance at room temperature and compare to Pentair specifications. A reading far out of range indicates a bad sensor.
  • Replace sensor: Install a new Pentair temperature sensor if defective. If a new sensor still causes ERR TEMP, the control board may need replacement.
