Possible Causes
Clogged Pentair inlet screen, Fouled resin bed, Undersized softener for flow demand, Partially closed bypass or shutoff valves
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Place the unit in BYPASS to restore pressure while troubleshooting. Shut off water and relieve pressure before opening the valve or tank.
- Bypass test: If pressure returns to normal in BYPASS, the restriction is within the softener.
- Check valves: Ensure inlet, outlet, and bypass handles are fully open in SERVICE position.
- Clean inlet screen: Remove and clean the Pentair inlet screen or filter in the control valve if equipped.
- Resin fouling: If the unit is old or exposed to iron, the resin may be plugging. Consider resin cleaning or replacing the Pentair cation resin.
- Sizing review: Compare your peak flow demand to the softener’s service flow rating. If undersized, upgrading to a larger Pentair unit may be necessary.
