Possible Causes
Exhausted or fouled resin bed, Insufficient salt dose, Brine not being drawn properly, Bypass valve partially open
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Shut off water and depressurize before opening the mineral tank or valve. Wear eye protection and gloves when handling resin or chemicals.
- Check bypass: Ensure the Pentair bypass valve is fully in the SERVICE position, not partially in BYPASS.
- Brine draw test: During regeneration, confirm the brine level in the tank drops. If not, clean the Pentair injector/nozzle and brine line.
- Salt and settings: Verify there is adequate salt in the brine tank and that the salt dose (lbs per regen) is appropriate for your resin volume and hardness.
- Resin condition: If the unit is older or has been exposed to iron or chlorine, the resin may be fouled. Consider cleaning with a resin cleaner or replacing the Pentair cation resin bed.
- Water test: Test hardness before and after the softener. If there is little or no reduction, resin replacement is likely required.
