Possible Causes

Jammed main piston, Broken cam gear, Control board not sending end-of-cycle signal, Debris in valve body

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Immediately place the unit in bypass to stop continuous drain and prevent wasting water. Unplug the unit.

  • 1. Inspect cam and motor: Remove the control cover and check if the cam is stuck between positions or if gears are stripped.
  • 2. Check piston movement: With pressure relieved, attempt to manually index the valve (if design allows). If it binds, the piston or seals may be fouled with iron or scale.
  • 3. Clean valve internals: Disassemble the control valve according to the RainSoft service manual. Clean the piston, seals, and spacers. Replace any worn or swollen seals.
  • 4. Reassemble and test: Rebuild the valve, restore power, and run a full regeneration while monitoring for proper step changes.

Note: Full valve rebuild is moderately advanced. If you are not experienced with water softener valves, have a RainSoft technician perform this repair.
