Possible Causes
Stuck flow turbine, Debris or iron fouling in meter, Failed Hall-effect flow sensor, Broken flow sensor cable
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Place the softener in bypass and relieve pressure by opening a nearby faucet before removing any plumbing components.
- 1. Confirm symptom: Use water in the house while watching the display. If the flow rate stays at 0.0, the meter is not reporting.
- 2. Remove flow meter: On many RainSoft units, the flow meter is integrated into the control valve outlet or in an external meter body. Disconnect unions and carefully remove the meter.
- 3. Clean turbine: Inspect the turbine/impeller for sand, iron sludge, or scale. Clean with a soft brush and soak in a mild vinegar solution if mineralized. Ensure the turbine spins freely with a gentle puff of air.
- 4. Inspect sensor: Check the Hall sensor or reed switch mounted on the meter body. Ensure it is firmly seated and not cracked. Verify the cable is intact and not pinched.
- 5. Reinstall and test: Reassemble the meter, restore service, and check for leaks. Run water and confirm the display now shows flow. If E5 remains, the sensor or control input may be defective.
Next step: Replace the RainSoft flow meter assembly or sensor module if cleaning does not restore operation.
