Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Immediately disconnect power and close inlet and outlet valves. Do not continue to operate a leaking softener.
Step-by-step checks:
- 1. Inspect inside cabinet: Remove the front or top cover and look for standing water in the base tray. Use towels or a wet vacuum to remove water.
- 2. Locate leak source: Check around the control valve, inlet/outlet connections, brine line connections, and brine tank for drips or salt deposits. Tighten any loose compression or push-fit fittings.
- 3. Check brine tank water level: If the brine tank is overfilled, the refill valve or control valve may be stuck open. Manually bail out excess water to just above the grid or salt level.
- 4. Inspect leak/overflow sensor: Many Scalemaster units have a float or probe in the base tray. Ensure it moves freely and is not jammed by debris. Dry it thoroughly.
- 5. Test after drying: Once all leaks are repaired and the cabinet is dry, restore power and water. Monitor closely for any further leakage.
If you cannot identify the leak source or E09 persists despite a dry cabinet, contact a Scalemaster service engineer. Persistent leaks can cause serious damage and should not be ignored.
