Water Hammer / Rapid Valve Operation Noise
Water softener makes loud banging or hammering noises when regenerating
Advertisements
Possible Causes
High mains pressure with no shock arrestor, Fast-closing Scalemaster control valve stages, Loose pipe clips on supply lines, Undersized or long flexible hoses
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: No immediate hazard, but repeated hammer can damage plumbing.
Step-by-step checks:
- 1. Check pipe support: Ensure pipes feeding the softener are securely clipped to walls or joists.
- 2. Reduce pressure: If pressure is high, have a plumber fit or adjust a pressure reducing valve.
- 3. Install water hammer arrestor: Ask a plumber to fit a hammer arrestor near the softener inlet if hammer persists.
Internal valve timing is factory set; do not attempt to modify regeneration speeds without Scalemaster guidance.
