Possible Causes

Exhausted or fouled cation resin bed, Incorrect hardness or capacity programming, Bypass valve partially open, Insufficient salt dosage or empty brine tank

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: No electrical or plumbing disassembly is required for initial checks. Wear gloves when handling salt and chemicals.

Steps to restore softening capacity:

  • 1. Verify bypass position: Confirm the SpringWell bypass valve is fully in the SERVICE position. A partially open bypass can mix hard and soft water.
  • 2. Check salt level: Open the brine tank and ensure there is adequate salt (at least 1/3 full). Refill with high-purity solar or pellet salt if low.
  • 3. Confirm programming: Verify that the hardness setting matches your actual water hardness and that the capacity and salt dose are set per SpringWell's recommendations.
  • 4. Force a manual regeneration: Initiate a manual regen and allow it to complete. Test water hardness after the cycle using a hardness test kit.
  • 5. Clean or replace resin: If water remains hard, the resin may be iron-fouled or exhausted. Treat with a resin cleaner per SpringWell guidelines, or replace the SpringWell cation resin media in the mineral tank.
