Possible Causes

Failed evaporator thermistor, Thermistor wire damaged by ice or fan blades, Loose thermistor connector at control board, Faulty main control board sensor circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect power before accessing internal components. Sharp metal edges and ice can cause injury.

  • Defrost the unit: If there is heavy frost on the back wall, unplug the cooler and leave the door open for several hours until all ice melts. Place towels to catch water.
  • Access the evaporator area: Remove the interior rear panel (inside the cabinet) to expose the evaporator coil and fan. The evaporator thermistor is usually clipped to the evaporator tubing or mounted near the coil.
  • Inspect the thermistor: Look for a small probe or plastic-encased sensor attached to the coil. Check for broken insulation, cut wires, or a sensor that has fallen off the coil.
  • Check wiring and connectors: Follow the thermistor wires to the pass-through grommet and then to the control board. Ensure there are no nicks from fan blades and that connectors are firmly seated.
  • Test resistance: With the cooler unplugged, disconnect the thermistor from the board and measure resistance. Compare to the cabinet thermistor at similar temperature; they should be in a similar range. Infinite or zero resistance indicates a bad sensor.
  • Replace the sensor: Install an OEM Avanti evaporator thermistor. Clip it securely to the evaporator tubing in the same location as the original to ensure accurate defrost and temperature control.
  • Control board evaluation: If a new sensor does not clear E2, the main control board may not be reading the sensor correctly and will need replacement.
