Possible Causes

Failed evaporator thermistor, Thermistor wiring harness damaged by ice or vibration, Faulty connection at control board, Control board sensor circuit failure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety warning: Always disconnect power before removing panels or touching wiring. Sharp metal edges inside the cabinet and rear compartment can cause injury; wear cut-resistant gloves.

Steps to address E1:

  • Power cycle: Unplug the cooler for 5–10 minutes, then plug it back in. If E1 reappears, proceed.
  • Access the evaporator area: Remove interior shelves and the rear interior panel (usually held by Phillips screws) to expose the evaporator coil and fan. The evaporator thermistor is typically clipped to the evaporator tubing or mounted near it.
  • Inspect the thermistor: Look for a small probe or bullet sensor attached to the evaporator. Check for broken insulation, corrosion, or a sensor that has fallen out of its clip and is dangling.
  • Check wiring and connectors: Follow the thermistor wires to the harness connector. Ensure the connector is tight and free of moisture or corrosion. At the control board, verify the plug is fully seated.
  • Test the thermistor: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the thermistor and measure resistance. Compare to expected values (commonly ~10kΩ at 77°F/25°C; resistance should change smoothly with temperature). Open or short readings indicate a bad sensor.
  • Replace if defective: Install a new EdgeStar-compatible evaporator temperature sensor. Clip it securely to the evaporator tubing in the same location as the original to ensure accurate defrost and temperature control.
  • If sensor is good: The control board may not be reading the sensor correctly. Inspect the board for damage and replace the main control board if necessary.

Note: After replacement, allow several hours of operation to confirm stable temperatures and that the E1 code does not return.
