Possible Causes

Faulty compressor start relay or PTC, Overload protector tripping due to high current, Loose compressor wiring, Defective main control board relay

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Critical safety warning: Unplug the wine cooler before accessing the compressor compartment. The compressor and associated components can be hot. Do not attempt sealed system repairs (refrigerant) unless you are EPA-certified.

Steps to address E3:

  • Check ventilation: Ensure the rear and sides of the cooler have proper clearance and that the condenser coil is not clogged with dust. Overheating can cause overload trips.
  • Access the compressor area: Remove the rear lower service panel to expose the compressor, start relay/PTC, and overload protector.
  • Inspect wiring and components: Look for burnt connectors, melted plastic on the start relay, or discoloration on the overload protector. Ensure all spade terminals are tight on the compressor pins.
  • Test the start relay/PTC: With the unit unplugged, remove the relay from the compressor. Shake it gently; if it rattles excessively or smells burnt, it is likely bad. You can also test continuity with a multimeter according to the relay type.
  • Check the overload protector: Test for continuity across the overload device. An open circuit when cool indicates a failed overload.
  • Replace faulty components: Install a new EdgeStar-compatible compressor start relay/PTC and/or overload protector as needed. Reconnect wiring exactly as originally configured.
  • If start components are good: The main control board relay that powers the compressor may be defective. Inspect the board for burnt solder joints or relay damage and replace the control board if necessary.

Stop and call a pro if: The compressor is drawing very high current, is locked (hums then clicks off), or you suspect a sealed system issue. These conditions require a professional technician.
