Possible Causes

Blocked condenser airflow, Condenser fan failure, Excessive ambient temperature, Overheated compressor triggering thermal protection, Faulty high-temp sensor on condenser

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit and allow hot components to cool before touching. The compressor and condenser can be very hot during an overheat condition.

Steps to resolve E8:

  • Check installation: Verify that the cooler has adequate clearance at the rear and sides per EdgeStar specifications. Built-in models must not have blocked front ventilation grills.
  • Clean the condenser coil: Remove the rear lower panel and use a soft brush and vacuum to remove dust and lint from the condenser coil and surrounding area.
  • Inspect the condenser fan: Confirm the fan spins freely and is not obstructed by debris. Check the fan motor wiring and connector.
  • Test the condenser fan motor: With power disconnected, measure resistance across the motor leads. An open circuit indicates a failed motor. Replace with an EdgeStar-compatible condenser fan motor if defective.
  • Check ambient temperature: Ensure the unit is not installed in a location exceeding the recommended ambient temperature (typically 50–90°F). Relocate if necessary.
  • Reset and test: After cleaning and any repairs, allow the unit to cool for 30–60 minutes, then restore power. If E8 returns quickly, the high-temp sensor or control board may be faulty.
  • Replace high-temp sensor or board: If your model has a dedicated condenser temperature sensor, test and replace it as needed. Otherwise, replace the main control board if all mechanical causes are resolved.

Warning: Persistent overheat errors after cleaning and fan replacement may indicate a sealed system problem (e.g., overcharge, restriction). Contact a professional technician in that case.
