Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the cooler before accessing the compressor compartment. Components may be hot.
Steps:
- Confirm power: Ensure the outlet has power and the unit is switched on. Check the circuit breaker.
- Listen for operation: When plugged in, listen for a click or hum from the compressor. Repeated clicking without running suggests start component issues.
- Access compressor components: Remove the rear lower panel to expose the compressor, start relay/PTC, and overload protector.
- Inspect and test start relay and overload: Remove the relay and overload from the compressor. Check for burn marks or melted plastic. Test for continuity with a multimeter; replace any open or obviously damaged parts.
- Check compressor windings: With components removed, measure resistance between the compressor terminals. Infinite resistance or a direct short to ground indicates a failed compressor.
- Replace faulty parts: Install an EdgeStar-compatible start relay/PTC and overload protector if they test bad. If the compressor itself is defective, the entire sealed system repair must be done by a professional.
Note: If the compressor never receives power (no voltage at its terminals when it should be running), the main control board or wiring is likely at fault and may need replacement.
