Possible Causes
Overheated compressor due to poor ventilation, Failed compressor start relay or overload protector, Blocked condenser coil, Faulty main control board driving compressor incorrectly
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before accessing the compressor compartment. The compressor and nearby components can be hot.
- Check ventilation: Ensure the wine cooler has proper clearance per GE specifications (typically several inches at rear and sides). Remove any obstructions blocking airflow around the condenser.
- Clean condenser: Remove the rear lower panel to access the condenser coil. Use a soft brush and vacuum to remove dust and lint from the coil and condenser fan area.
- Inspect compressor start components: With power disconnected, remove the start relay/overload assembly from the compressor terminals. Check for signs of burning or rattling (a loose internal piece). Replace the start relay/overload if damaged.
- Fan operation: Confirm the condenser fan spins freely by hand. If seized or noisy, replace the condenser fan motor.
- Restore power and test: After cleaning and replacing any faulty parts, plug the unit back in and monitor operation. If E5 returns and the compressor is extremely hot or fails to start, a technician should evaluate for sealed system or compressor failure.
