Possible Causes

Defective cabinet NTC thermistor, Broken or loose sensor wiring harness, Corroded connector at main control board, Failed main control board temperature input circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the Hotpoint wine cooler from the mains before removing any panels. Do not work on live circuits.

  • Power reset: Disconnect power for 5 minutes, then reconnect to see if E1 clears. Sometimes a transient fault can trigger the code.
  • Locate the cabinet sensor: Inside the wine cooler, find the small plastic sensor probe usually mounted on the rear or side wall, connected by thin wires.
  • Inspect the sensor and wiring: Check for cuts, pinched wires, or signs of moisture damage. Ensure the sensor is firmly clipped in place and not dangling.
  • Check connections at the control board: Remove the top or rear control panel (depending on model). Locate the NTC sensor connector on the main PCB and reseat it. Look for corrosion or burnt marks.
  • Test the sensor (for advanced DIYers): With the unit unplugged, disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance with a multimeter. Compare to the Hotpoint service chart (typically 5–20 kΩ depending on temperature). If open, shorted, or far out of spec, replace the sensor.
  • Replace the cabinet temperature sensor: If faulty, order a Hotpoint-compatible cabinet NTC sensor for your exact model. Route the new sensor along the original path and secure it with clips or tape, avoiding sharp edges.
  • If E1 persists: The main control board’s sensor input may be defective. At this point, replacement of the control board is recommended and is best done by a qualified technician.
