Possible Causes
Failed compressor start relay or PTC, Open thermal overload protector, Low supply voltage or power surge damage, Seized or locked compressor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before accessing the compressor compartment. Capacitors can hold charge; avoid touching terminals.
- Check ventilation: Ensure the wine cooler has adequate clearance around the rear and sides. Overheating can trigger overload protection.
- Access compressor area: Remove the rear lower service panel to expose the compressor, start device, and overload protector.
- Inspect start relay/PTC: Remove the plastic cover on the compressor terminals. Check the start device for burn marks, rattling pieces, or melted plastic. Replace if damaged.
- Test overload protector: With a multimeter, check continuity across the overload device. An open circuit when cool indicates failure and it should be replaced.
- Check wiring: Verify all wires to the compressor, relay, and overload are secure and not burnt.
- Replace start components: Install a Hotpoint-compatible compressor start relay/PTC and overload protector if faulty. Refit the terminal cover securely.
- If compressor still hums and trips: The compressor itself may be mechanically locked or internally shorted. This requires sealed-system service by a licensed refrigeration technician.
