Safety: Unplug the cooler before defrosting or accessing the evaporator area.
Steps:
- 1. Manual defrost: Remove all bottles, unplug the unit, and leave the door open to allow ice to melt. Place towels to catch water. Do not use sharp tools to chip ice.
- 2. Check door seal: Inspect and replace the door gasket if it is not sealing properly, as this is a common cause of excess frost.
- 3. Inspect evaporator area: After defrosting, remove the rear interior panel and check that the evaporator fan and defrost sensor are correctly positioned and not covered in ice.
- 4. Test defrost sensor and heater: Use a multimeter to check the defrost thermistor and heater for continuity. Replace any components that test open or out of range.
- 5. Restore and monitor: Reassemble, plug in, and monitor for several days. If heavy frost returns quickly, further diagnosis of the defrost system or control board may be needed.
