Possible Causes

Overheated compressor, Failed compressor start relay or overload, Low line voltage or power supply issue, Faulty main control board compressor driver

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the wine cooler before touching the compressor, relay, or any wiring. Components can be hot and carry mains voltage.

Steps to address E5:

  • Check installation conditions: Ensure the cooler has adequate ventilation (typically at least 2–3 inches clearance at sides and back) and is not in a confined cabinet. Overheating can trigger protection.
  • Inspect power supply: Plug the unit directly into a properly grounded wall outlet. Avoid extension cords or power strips. Verify outlet voltage is within 110–120V (North America) using a multimeter if available.
  • Listen for compressor behavior: After plugging in, listen for the compressor. Repeated clicking every few minutes without sustained running suggests a start relay or overload issue.
  • Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower panel to expose the compressor, start relay, and overload protector.
  • Check for overheating: Carefully touch the compressor shell (it may be warm but should not be dangerously hot). If extremely hot, allow it to cool for 30–60 minutes unplugged.
  • Inspect start relay and overload: Remove the plastic cover on the compressor terminals. Check the relay and overload for burn marks, melted plastic, or loose connections.
  • Test or replace relay/overload: If you have a multimeter, test continuity of the overload and resistance of the relay per NewAir specs. If in doubt or if there are visible signs of damage, replace the assembly with a compatible NewAir compressor start relay and overload kit.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall the terminal cover and rear panel, plug the unit back in, and monitor. The compressor should start and run smoothly without repeated clicking, and the E5 code should clear.

Important: If the compressor hums loudly then trips, or if it does not start even with a new relay/overload, the compressor itself may be failed. Compressor replacement requires specialized tools and should be performed only by a licensed refrigeration technician.
