E1
Unit powers on but does not heat water; display shows E1 shortly after opening a hot water tap.
Inlet Water Temperature Sensor Fault
E10
Unit shows E10 and will not start heating; often associated with incorrect supply voltage.
Supply Voltage Out of Range
E11
Display shows E11; unit may heat briefly then shut down.
Ground Fault / Leakage Current Detected
E12
Unit displays E12; may coincide with very hot outlet temperatures or erratic readings.
Temperature Sensor Calibration / Mismatch Fault
E13
Display shows E13; unit may not modulate correctly, causing overshoot or undershoot of set temperature.
Current Sensor / Power Monitoring Fault
E14
Unit displays E14 and will not start; may occur after overheating events.
Thermal Cutoff / Safety Fuse Open
E15
Display shows E15; unit may shut down when multiple elements should be active.
Stage Firing / Element Sequencing Fault
E16
Unit shows E16; may be associated with very cold inlet water or extreme setpoints.
Temperature Rise Limit Exceeded / Delta-T Fault
E17
Display shows E17; unit may not recognize flow correctly, cycling on and off.
Flow Signal Instability / Noise Fault
E18
Unit displays E18; may occur after a long period of inactivity or after service.
Dry-Fire Protection / No Water Detected
E19
Display shows E19; unit may not respond to remote or external control signals.
External Control / Modbus / BMS Communication Fault (if equipped)
E2
Water temperature fluctuates or unit shuts down with E2 on the display during operation.
Outlet Water Temperature Sensor Fault
E20
Unit shows E20; may be associated with internal memory or configuration issues.
EEPROM / Configuration Memory Fault
E3
Display shows E3 and unit will not heat; may occur immediately when a hot tap is opened.
Flow Sensor / Flow Meter Fault
E4
Unit shuts down with E4 on the display; water may be excessively hot just before shutdown.
Over-Temperature Protection / High Limit Trip
E5
Display shows E5 and unit does not heat; may appear intermittently when demand is high.
Heating Element Overcurrent / Element Circuit Fault
E6
Unit displays E6 and will not heat; may occur after a power surge or lightning event.
Control Board Communication / Internal Fault
E7
Display shows E7; unit may heat erratically or not at all.
Triac / Relay Drive Fault
E8
Unit displays E8 and shuts down; may be accompanied by very low or no water flow.
Low Flow / Minimum Activation Flow Not Reached
E9
Display shows E9; unit may not respond to temperature adjustments or may shut down.
User Interface / Display Board Communication Fault
Symptom
Condensation or water droplets visible inside the EcoSmart unit; corrosion starting on components.
Moisture Intrusion / Condensation
Symptom
EcoSmart display is on, but buttons or dial do not respond to input.
User Interface Control Failure
Symptom
EcoSmart heater runs but hot water takes a very long time to reach fixtures.
Long Hot Water Delivery Time
Symptom
EcoSmart unit frequently shuts off when a small amount of hot water is used (e.g., handwashing).
Minimum Flow / Short-Cycling Issue
Symptom
EcoSmart unit is noisy with water hammer or banging sounds when taps are opened or closed.
Hydraulic Shock / Water Hammer
Symptom
EcoSmart unit is warm or hot to the touch on the outside cabinet during operation.
Cabinet Heat / Insulation Inefficiency
Symptom
EcoSmart unit makes loud clicking or buzzing noises when hot water is used.
Relay / Triac Noise or Element Expansion Noise
Symptom
EcoSmart unit trips the breaker whenever hot water is used.
Overcurrent / Short Circuit Under Load
Symptom
EcoSmart water heater emits a burning smell or visible smoke during operation.
Overheating Electrical Components
Symptom
EcoSmart water heater output temperature is inconsistent between different fixtures in the home.
Plumbing Cross-Connection / Mixing Issues
Symptom
GFCI or RCD protecting the EcoSmart heater trips during or shortly after hot water use.
Ground Leakage Under Operation
Symptom
No hot water at any faucet; EcoSmart water heater display is completely blank (no lights or numbers).
No Power to Unit
Symptom
No hot water, but EcoSmart display is on and shows normal readings; temperature set correctly.
Heating Elements Not Energizing
Symptom
Water is too hot, even at low temperature settings; small adjustments cause big temperature changes.
Overheating / Poor Temperature Control
Symptom
Water is warm but not hot enough, even with EcoSmart temperature set to maximum.
Insufficient Heating Capacity / Underheating
Symptom
Water leaks from the bottom of the EcoSmart water heater cabinet.
Internal Water Leak
Symptom
Water temperature fluctuates between hot and cold during a shower.
Temperature Modulation / Flow Instability
