E1
Controller shows E1 and pump will not start; often after incorrect wiring or new installation.
Incorrect Wiring / Polarity Error
E2
Display shows E2 and pump stops or refuses to start, often after a storm or brownout.
Under/Over Voltage Protection
E3
Pump runs briefly then stops with E3 on the display.
Flow Sensor / Pressure Switch Fault (where fitted)
E4
E4 displayed and pump will not start; may be accompanied by a blank or flickering screen.
Keypad / User Interface Failure
E5
Pump display shows E5 and the unit shuts down shortly after starting.
Internal Temperature Sensor Fault
E6
E6 error appears randomly; pump may start and stop unexpectedly.
Internal Drive Communication / Firmware Error
F1
Pump will not start, controller beeps and displays F1 immediately after pressing START.
Low/No Water Flow Protection Trip
F2
Pump stops shortly after starting and displays F2 on the Hurlcon controller.
Dry Run / Loss of Prime Protection
F3
Pump attempts to start, hums briefly, then stops and displays F3.
Overcurrent / Motor Overload Trip
F4
Pump stops during operation and displays F4, often on hot days or after running for several hours.
Motor Thermal Overload / Overtemperature
F5
Controller shows F5 and pump will not start; sometimes occurs after a power surge or lightning storm.
Controller–Motor Communication Fault
F6
Display shows F6 and pump does not run; may occur intermittently when starting.
Phase / Supply Voltage Error (Single-Phase Protection)
F7
Pump stops and F7 appears, often when switching between speed settings on a variable-speed Hurlcon pump.
Speed Selection / Internal Drive Fault
F8
Display shows F8 and pump will not run; sometimes accompanied by a faint clicking sound from the control box.
Relay / Output Stage Failure
F9
Pump display shows F9 and the motor does not attempt to start.
Internal Motor Protection / Locked Rotor Detection
Hi
Display shows 'Hi' and pump may shut down or run noisily.
High Pressure / Overload Condition
Lo
Display alternates between speed setting and 'Lo'; pump runs at reduced output or stops.
Low Flow / Low Pressure Condition
Symptom
Pump emits a burning smell or visible smoke from the motor housing.
Motor Overheating / Insulation Breakdown
Symptom
Pump hums loudly but does not start; may trip the breaker after a few seconds.
Failed Start Capacitor / Stalled Rotor
Symptom
Pump is unusually loud with a cavitating, gravelly sound and visible air in the pump lid.
Cavitation Due to Restriction or High Suction Lift
Symptom
Pump is very noisy, with a grinding or screeching sound from the motor end.
Worn Motor Bearings
Symptom
Pump loses prime after a few minutes of running and then sucks air.
Suction Air Leak / Cavitation
Symptom
Pump makes a rattling or clunking noise from the wet end, especially at startup.
Loose or Damaged Impeller / Debris in Volute
Symptom
Pump runs but air bubbles are constantly visible at the pool return jets.
Minor Air Ingress on Suction Side
Symptom
Pump runs but makes a high-pitched whine, especially at certain speeds on a variable-speed Hurlcon pump.
Drive Frequency Noise / Resonance
Symptom
Pump runs but overheats and shuts down after 10–30 minutes, then restarts when cooled.
Thermal Overload Cycling
Symptom
Pump runs but pool circulation is weak; return jets have low pressure.
Reduced Flow / Hydraulic Restriction
Symptom
Pump runs but pressure gauge on filter reads much higher than normal.
High System Pressure
Symptom
Pump runs but pressure gauge on filter reads much lower than normal.
Low System Pressure / Low Flow
Symptom
Pump runs but there is no water movement; pump pot does not fill with water.
Loss of Prime / Airlocked Pump
Symptom
Pump starts and stops rapidly (short cycling) without user input.
Control Instability / Faulty Sensor or Relay
Symptom
Pump timer or controller does not start the pump at scheduled times, but pump runs in manual mode.
Controller Programming / Timer Fault
Symptom
Pump trips the circuit breaker or RCD immediately when turned on.
Electrical Short / Earth Leakage
Symptom
Pump vibrates excessively, causing pipes to shake or rattle.
Imbalance / Misalignment
Symptom
Pump will not start at all, no hum, no click, and no display on Hurlcon controller.
No Power / Dead Pump
Symptom
Water leaking from around the clear pump lid when the pump is running.
Leaking Pump Lid Seal
Symptom
Water leaking from the join between the pump housing and motor, or from under the motor.
Failed Mechanical Seal
Symptom
Water leaking from the threaded unions or pipe connections on the pump.
Leaking Unions / Threaded Fittings
